Greetings,

This place looks almost dead. Is there anyone left who is interested in discussing the theory of monads?

You are right...it amazes me how little philosophical discussion there is, in the end, in internet. But count me in!

To what should we not ascribe monads to? Is the "p" in the word "period" a monad, for instance? What about an electron? Is the colour blue a monad? Are angels monads? Surely an infinity--or multiple infinities, as in the case of the negative numbers, natural numbers, et al--of potential monads present themselves to us begging for recognition. What sayest thou?

One thing is to think whether a substance is material or immaterial...that limits the possibilities. In addition, a substance has to have perceptions and appetition. Do numbers have perceptions?

I'm not sure of the difference between material and immaterial. To me, all sense-impressions are "material" and thoughts and emotions are immaterial. So a symbol would be a sense-impression and therefore material, but a number is a thought and therefore immaterial.

I have trouble accepting that anything can be real and yet not have a perceptions and appetition, so I question how a number can be real and lack those things. What exactly is a number that lacks such? Are numbers really less real than other things?

I seem to remember that in Meditations on Cognition, truth and Ideas Leibniz says something like our knowledge of numbers approaches adequate knowledge...

I just remembered: see Leibniz's On What is Independent of Sense and of Matter (in Loemker (ed.), Leibniz, Philosophical papers and letters) - there he discusses of numbers at least.
